Title FDA Finalizes New Labeling Law
Introduction EMSL Analytical offers two analytical options that can help food establishments become compliant in time for the newly implemented labeling rule.

Cinnaminson, NJ, December 12th, 2014

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has implemented a new rule that will require chain restaurants or similar retail food establishments with 20 or more locations to display calories on its menus or menu boards along with having other nutrient information made available in writing on request. Additional information could include total calories, calories from fat, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, fiber, protein, sodium, sugars and total carbohydrates. According to the FDA, the effective date has been extended from six months to one year after the date of the publication of the final rule.

The new labeling rule will also apply to vending machines. While some foods sold from vending machines already include calorie information, this labeling is not always visible before purchase. The FDA is allowing two years from the date of publication of the vending machine labeling final rule for covered vending machine operators to display calorie information of the foods sold in the machines in a direct, accessible and consistent manner.

EMSL Analytical, Inc. offers two analytical options that can help food establishments become compliant in time for the newly implemented labeling rule. EMSL offers nutritional labeling through chemistry analysis or by using Genesis database software to help format ingredients and recipes. At EMSL, volume discounts are also available on projects with three or more samples.

“Providing consumers with easy access to caloric and other nutritional information is an important component of making informed buying decisions,” stated Deepa Thakar, National Food Technical Sales Manager at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “EMSL provides high-quality service at competitive prices to help national restaurants and food manufacturers remain compliant with labeling regulations.”

EMSL has multiple food testing laboratories conveniently located throughout North America. For more information about food labeling or other analytical services, please visit www.foodtestinglab.com or www.emsl.com, email info@emsl.com or call 1-800-220-3675.
