Title Marijuana Smoke Residue Test Kit Helps Property Managers & Future Tenants Identify Contaminants
Introduction EMSL Analytical provides test kits to identify marijuana smoke residues left on surfaces in homes, apartments and hotel rooms.

Cinnaminson, NJ, February 19th, 2015

Today, in twenty-three states and the District of Columbia there are laws that legalize marijuana in one form or another, often for medical purposes. Several states have even legalized the use of marijuana for recreational use. In addition, marijuana is one of the most commonly used illegal drugs in the nation.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), “In 2012, there were 18.9 million current (past-month) users—about 7.3 percent of people aged 12 or older—up from 14.4 million (5.8 percent) in 2007.”  With millions of people smoking marijuana, the smoke residues left behind in homes, apartments and hotel rooms is a growing concern.

Marijuana residues can contain a host of chemicals, including THC, the chemical responsible for many of marijuana’s effects.  NIDA reports, “The amount of THC in marijuana samples confiscated by police has been increasing steadily over the past few decades. In 2012, THC concentrations in marijuana averaged close to 15 percent, compared to around 4 percent in the 1980s.”

Many property managers, landlords and even future tenants have shown a growing worry over marijuana smoke residues impacting properties and creating health concerns for building occupants.  “Marijuana smoke residues, especially for people with young children, is a real issue for many people looking for a rental property,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “After many requests for a simple way to test for marijuana smoke residues, we are pleased to now offer a special test kit.  The result of these tests offer the client valuable information related to the extent of residues that may have been left behind from a former occupant. These results could also be used for cleaning assessments and insurance claims.”
