Even though some parts of the country are still experiencing winter’s freezing temperatures, the official start of spring is only a few weeks away. With warmer weather conditions coming soon, concerns over ticks and Lyme disease are a significant issue in many areas.
During warm months, ticks are very active and people spend more time outdoors where ticks can be present. It is important for adults to check themselves and their children for the presence of ticks and for any signs and symptoms of tick bites. Be sure to search hair, bodies and clothing for their presence. If any ticks are found, they should be removed and can be submitted to EMSL Analytical, Inc. to test for the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi.
Borrelia burgdorferi is the bacterium that causes Lyme disease and is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected tick. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue and a characteristic skin rash known as erythema migrans. If left untreated, the infection can spread to joints, the heart and the nervous system.
“After numerous requests for a simple way to test ticks for the presence of the Lyme disease bacterium, we are pleased to now offer a special test kit for the general public,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Once the kit is sent to EMSL for analysis, laboratory testing harnesses the power of PCR based DNA analysis for rapid and highly accurate detection. Sample analysis can even be performed the same day samples are received, if requested. If a tick tests positive for the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi, the person who has been bitten by the tick should consult with a medical professional for the appropriate treatment options.”
