According to CBC News, in late July, Memorial University in St. Johns, Canada temporarily closed its campus after higher than acceptable levels of lead were found in the drinking water of several buildings. The campus reopened several days later as bottled water and special lead-removing filters were added to some of the drinking fountains as more tests were conducted.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Lead is rarely found in source water, but enters tap water through corrosion of plumbing materials. Homes built before 1986 are more likely to have lead pipes, fixtures and solder. The most common problem is with brass or chrome-plated brass faucets and fixtures which can leach significant amounts of lead into the water, especially hot water.”
The amount of lead that may be found in drinking water also depends on the types and amounts of minerals in the water, how long the water stays in the pipes, the amount of wear in the pipes, the water’s acidity and its temperature. “Although most water providers test for lead as a component of their regular water monitoring programs, these tests only give a system wide indication and do not reflect conditions from a specific water outlet in a home or building,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “For people concerned about lead in their water at home, school or work, testing is the only way to know if it is present.”
EMSL Analytical, with laboratories throughout Canada and the United States, offers comprehensive lead testing services in water and other matrices. The laboratory has also developed an easy-to-use Drinking Water Test Kit that monitors for lead, total coliform,
E. coli, nitrate, nitrite, turbidity, iron, manganese and pH. To learn more or to obtain a test kit, please visit:
