Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provided new information about an outbreak of salmonellosis that has been reported in 30 states so far. The CDC, along with state health agencies and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are investigating the outbreak caused by Salmonella bacteria associated with contaminated cucumbers imported from Mexico.
Since July 3rd of this year, 341 people have been infected with the outbreak strains of Salmonella. So far, 70 people have been hospitalized, and deaths have been reported in California and Texas. The CDC has indicated that 53% of sick individuals in this outbreak are children under the age of 18.
The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency has isolated Salmonella from cucumbers collected during a visit to a produce facility. The company that runs the facility has since issued a voluntarily recalled of all cucumbers sold under the “Limited Edition” brand label during the time period of August 1, 2015 through September 3, 2015.
“The public is urged to not eat the cucumbers in question, for restaurants to stop serving them and for retailers to take them off their shelves,” said Joy Dell’Aringa, M.S., RM (NRM), CFSP, National Food Director at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Each year, Salmonella from various sources is estimated to cause one million illnesses in the United States alone, resulting in 19,000 hospitalizations and 380 deaths according to the CDC. While most people recover following a Salmonella infection, it can be deadly in extreme circumstances. At EMSL, we provide testing services to prevent these types of outbreaks. These services are available to food importers, distributors, food manufacturers, retailers, health officials and the general public.”
