New York, NY, September 24th, 2015
Last month, it was reported that New York’s Broome County is considering a proposal to ban the use of electronic smoking devices in public buildings. If the county legislature adopts the proposal, it would prevent the use of the devices in areas already banned by the Clean Indoor Air Act.
E-cigarettes aerosolize nicotine and other substances which can then be inhaled by not just the product’s user, but also by people nearby. These substances include flavorings along with propylene glycol and glycerin that could be exposing people to airborne pollutants that could have health implications.
Currently, nine counties and New York City have similar legislation in place. Nationwide, there has been a growing trend with many state, county and city governments to regulate the use of e-cigarettes. Some countries have actually banned the devices all together and others regulate them as a drug delivery mechanism because of nicotine.
“The increasing popularity of e-cigarettes, exposure fears due to aerosols from the devices, and questions about ingredients, have created growing concern for many,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Many companies are also addressing health and exposure issues associated with the use of e-cigarettes by revisiting and adjusting their smoke-free policies.”
People concerned about exposure to nicotine from e-cigarettes or environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) can turn to EMSL Analytical for sampling supplies and comprehensive testing services. EMSL even offers an easy-to-use Nicotine Test Kit that identifies residues left on surfaces. This is a popular test for prospective renters and homebuyers who want to know if residues have been left in a property by previous tenants or owners.
