Woburn, MA, September 29th, 2015
WOBURN, MA – As part of a strategic expansion effort to provide Legionella testing services nationwide, EMSL’s Woburn, Massachusetts laboratory has passed the CDC ELITE Program for Legionella testing making it the eighth EMSL laboratory to provide this service. Other locations include Cinnaminson, NJ, New York, NY, Houston, TX, Indianapolis, IN, San Leandro, CA, South Pasadena, CA, and Toronto, Canada.
“As the result of increased demand for regional Legionella testing locations across the country due to the recent passage of ASHRAE 188 for preventing legionellosis in building water systems and the continuing outbreaks in New York City, other EMSL labs are also in the queue for Legionella certification for the remainder of 2015 and into 2016,” explained Diane Miskowski, MPH, Legionella Program Manager at EMSL Analytical, Inc.
Legionella can cause a very serious form of pneumonia known as Legionnaires’ disease, which often has long-term health effects such as cognitive decline and debilitating fatigue long after the patient is released from the hospital. While the CDC estimates 18,000 to 25,000 cases of Legionnaires’ disease annually, due to the way the disease is diagnosed in the United States, most cases go unreported. Legionella can also cause a less serious flu-like illness known as Pontiac Fever.
