A study in North Carolina conducted by the National Institutes of Health examined the effects of using test kits in a household to test for common allergens. Several common triggers within a home can lead to allergies, including mold, bacteria, pet dander, insects, rodents, dust mites, pollen, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
For the study, half of the participants were provided test kits, while the other half was provided educational material related to the allergens. Households that used the test kits were able to view levels of the indoor allergen from their own living conditions. Many participants were unaware the levels were so high within their homes and took action to reduce the levels by adding allergen-proof mattress covers and vacuuming with HEPA filters. Those that only received educational pamphlets were less likely to take steps to reduce the allergen within their indoor environment.
“Exposure to indoor allergens is quite common, often causing an allergic reaction for people sensitive to these allergens if they are breathed, touched or ingested,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “It is also not uncommon for some people to be allergic to more than one indoor allergen, and long term exposure to the allergen often worsens the condition. At EMSL, we provide testing services for indoor allergens and even offer a variety of test kits for homeowners.”
