EMSL’s Senior Mycologist, Dr. Željko Jurjevic, identified two isolates that were encountered from sampling fungi in a built environment that could not be placed under a described species. Dr. Jurjevic along with Dr. Stephen W. Peterson discovered Aspergillus asper and Aspergillus collinsii as distinct species in section Usti.
Through phenotypic analysis, the two isolates were suggested to belong in Aspergillus sect. Usti. DNA isolation was conducted along with comparison to other species in Aspergillus sect. Usti. Then, GenBank data for section Usti species excluded the placement of the isolates in existing species resulting in the identification of Aspergillus asper and Aspergillus collinsii as distinct species in section Usti.
"We are very proud of Dr. Jurjevic’s continuous hard work and dedication in identifying new species,” said Dr. Jason Dobranic, Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Dr. Jurjevic’s impressive accomplishment in providing breakthrough information to help the overall industry while still providing high-quality data for clients is a tribute to our dedicated staff at EMSL.”
