In May, WDRB broadcasted a report about city workers from Louisville, Kentucky being moved to a new office building. The move involves approximately 300 people who have worked in a government building that has reportedly suffered from mold issues for four years. Employees have reported musty odors, respiratory issues and not feeling well after spending time in the building.
Elevated levels of mold in an indoor environment can cause a wide range of health concerns. Molds produce irritants, allergens and exposure can also trigger an asthma attack in some people with the condition. As an irritant, mold can irritate the eyes, skin, nose, throat and lungs. Some types of mold associated with contaminated indoor environments are also known to produce mycotoxins.
“It is not uncommon for employees working in a mold contaminated building to report musty odors and health concerns,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Symptoms may include headaches, difficulty breathing, skin irritation, allergic reactions and aggravated asthma symptoms. The only way to know for sure if people are breathing air with elevated levels of mold is to have the air tested. If a problem is found, efforts can then be focused on resolving the underlying issue to protect the health of building occupants.”
People who suspect they may be exposed to mold in their work environment can turn to the indoor air quality experts at EMSL Analytical, Inc. EMSL offers comprehensive air testing services for both microbial and chemical contaminants. They also provide sampling supplies and consumer test kits.
