Title EMSL Analytical, Inc. Is the Largest Provider of Legionella Testing in New York and North America with Three NYDOH ELAP Legionella Interim Certified Laboratories
Introduction EMSL Analytical offers NYDOH ELAP testing services for New York and its surrounding areas.

New York, NY, July 5th, 2016

As a result of the large Legionnaires’ disease outbreak that occurred in the Bronx during the summer of 2015, New York State and New York City passed regulations for registration of cooling towers and for monitoring those towers for Legionella. As part of those regulations, New York State Department of Health Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NYDOH ELAP) is requiring any laboratory doing Legionella testing for facilities in New York State to pass their certification program. This is a separate and distinct program than the CDC ELITE proficiency test program for Legionella testing.

“EMSL Analytical, Inc. is proud to announce that our Buffalo, Carle Place and Manhattan laboratories have received their interim certification for doing Legionella testing in New York State,” said Diane Miskowski, MPH, National Legionella Program Manager at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Due to the timing of the roll-out of the NYSDOH ELAP Legionella Program, there are no laboratories that have final certification yet. We will need to complete one more round of proficiency tests to receive our final certification. EMSL plans to have five NYSDOH Legionella certified labs serving the New York Legionella market by September 1, 2016. EMSL laboratories in Cinnaminson, New Jersey and Wallingford, Connecticut are also pursuing this certification. Additionally, EMSL has 15 laboratories in North America certified under the CDC ELITE Program.”

In addition to doing Legionella culture testing, EMSL has the capabilities to perform PCR, Sequence Based Typing and Whole Genome Sequencing for Legionella outbreak source identification. If you are interested in learning how the NYDOH ELAP Legionella and the CDC ELITE lab programs differ, or the difference between culture and molecular testing, please call Diane Miskowski at (800) 220-3675 extension 2528.
