In July, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized a rule to reduce exposure to formaldehyde from certain wood products produced domestically or imported into the United States. In 2010, the Formaldehyde Emission Standards for Composite Wood Products Act established emission standards for formaldehyde from composite wood products and directed the EPA to finalize a rule on implementing and enforcing a number of provisions associated with composite wood products.
The EPA states that one year after the rule is published, composite wood products that are sold, supplied, offered for sale, manufactured or imported in the United States will need to be labeled as TSCA (Toxic Substances Control Act) Title VI compliant. The purpose of TSCA Title VI is to reduce formaldehyde emissions from composite wood products, which will reduce exposures to formaldehyde and result in benefits from avoided adverse health effects.
The wood products covered include hardwood plywood, medium-density fiberboard and particleboard, along with household and other finished goods containing these products. The final rule includes provisions for laminated products, product testing requirements, labeling, recordkeeping and import certification. It ensures that hardwood plywood, medium-density fiberboard and particleboard products sold, supplied, offered for sale, imported to, or manufactured in the United States are in compliance with emission standards.
“Once the final rule goes into complete effect, people in new, remodeled and renovated buildings across the country will benefit from less formaldehyde in the air they breathe,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “EMSL offers formaldehyde testing services to help companies comply with the new requirements. We also offer comprehensive indoor air quality testing for those concerned about exposure to formaldehyde and other chemicals in their homes, schools and work environments.”
