Renters at an apartment complex in San Jose, California have filed a lawsuit against their landlord for what they claimed were substandard living conditions. Nine plaintiffs are part of the lawsuit and code enforcement authorities have gotten involved in assessing conditions at the complex.
Last month, ABC 7 broadcasted a report about the lawsuit and the conditions, including plaintiffs’ allegations that the building is infested with cockroaches, bedbugs, mold and poor water quality, given the water even worked. All of these conditions can cause health concerns for people living in the complex. Some residents may suffer allergic reactions to the presence of bedbugs, cockroaches and mold. Exposure to mold and cockroach allergens can also trigger asthma in some people with the condition.
“Tenants in California now have recourse when living in mold infested apartments due to a new state law that regulates housing conditions,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “It provides tenants with the ability to report mold problems as substandard housing. Prospective tenants should also be on the lookout for signs of water damage, mold, musty odors, insects and unsanitary conditions before they sign a lease. When possible, inspect the actual unit that is being considered for rent and some simple tests can quickly identify indoor contaminants that may not be visible to the naked eye.”
EMSL offers analytical services, sampling supplies and easy-to-use test kits to help identify these types of issues. Test results can be invaluable for both people looking to rent an apartment and for those already living in a property that they think may have an existing problem.
