EMSL’s Radiological Laboratory Division now provides expanded radon in water analysis. Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from the natural radioactive decay of radium. Radon is a noble gas, meaning it is colorless, odorless and chemically inert; therefore it cannot be detected by human senses.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), radon can dissolve in the water used in households for showering, washing and cooking. As the gas escapes from water, it releases into the air within the household. Breathing in radon gas can cause damage to the lung tissue and increase the risk of developing lung cancer. Water sources that come from underground, like a well that pumps water from an aquifer, are more likely to contain radon than a surface water source like a river or lake. With a surface water source, the radon gas has the ability to escape into the air before being transported into a water supply within the home.

At EMSL, we offer both air and water radon testing services. Radon in water is tested by an EPA procedure known as EPA Method 913.0. Analysis of radon in water should always be completed after air testing. Depending on the amount of radon in the results from air testing, it will be determined whether the water should also be analyzed.”
