Legionella Discovered in a Pennsylvania State Building’s Water Supply |
Introduction |
EMSL Analytical, Inc. offers legionella testing services to help pinpoint the source of an outbreak. |
Pittsburgh, PA, September 14 th, 2016
Earlier in September, higher than acceptable levels of the bacteria Legionella were discovered at a state building complex located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Legionella was discovered in the water cooling tower and a building on the complex. The Pennsylvania Department of Health is increasing water testing around the facility to help treat and prevent any further breakouts.
Legionella is a type of bacteria that is commonly found in water, occurring naturally in the environment or in manmade environments. When aerosolized water containing Legionella is inhaled or aspirated, it can cause Legionnaires’ disease. Symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease include fever, chills and coughing.
“Past Legionella outbreaks have been associated with cooling towers, hot tubs, hot water tanks, plumbing systems and decorative fountains,” said Diane Miskowski, MPH, National Legionella Program Manager at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Public building owners are highly recommended to prepare a building water management plan which assess the potential exposure and health risk for Legionella. Validation of the plan should be confirmed by doing regular Legionella testing.”
To help prevent cases of Legionnaires' disease, EMSL Analytical, Inc. has 14 laboratory locations across North America that are CDC ELITE certified for Legionella testing. Also, EMSL now offers a Legionella Pocket Guide that provides information about the bacteria and sampling techniques. To request a free copy of this guide, please click here.
