Title EMSL Long Island, New York Lab Offers Legionella Testing with CDC ELITE and New York State ELAP Certification
Introduction EMSL Analytical, Inc. is properly certified to analyze Legionella in New York State.

Carle Place, NY, October 13th, 2016

As of July 2016, New York State Department of Health Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NYSDOH ELAP) now requires that laboratories providing Legionella testing for facilities in New York State must pass their certification program. This is part of the same requirements announced by New York State and New York City that mandates registering cooling towers and monitoring those towers for Legionella contamination, which is a separate from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Environmental Legionella Isolation Techniques Evaluation (CDC ELITE) Program. EMSL Analytical, Inc.’s Carle Place laboratory has received its interim NYSDOH ELAP certification for Legionella analysis in the state of New York.

EMSL has been diligent in earning the necessary accreditations that are required for Legionella testing. Along with Carle Place, EMSL has three other laboratories that have earned the NYSDOH ELAP interim certification for Legionella testing in New York City, Buffalo and Cinnaminson, NJ. Collectively, EMSL has 15 laboratories that are CDC ELITE certified, which is the most by any laboratory in the country. With multiple, proficient locations, EMSL can handle large projects following outbreaks throughout New York and New Jersey.

“We take great pride in the stealth of our four labs in earning these essential interim certifications for Legionella in New York State,” said Diane Miskowski, MPH, National Legionella Program Manager at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “EMSL is continuously working to secure the most up-to-date certifications to provide high-quality Legionella analysis. Since the new regulation has recently been mandated, there aren’t any labs that have received the final certification yet. However, EMSL plans to be officially certified for this Legionella testing program by this October.”

EMSL’s network of Legionella testing laboratories have the ability to perform polymerase chain reaction (PCR), sequence-based typing and whole genome sequencing for Legionella outbreak source identification. To learn more about the difference between the CDC ELITE and NYSDOH ELAP Legionella programs, or for any inquiries involving Legionella analysis, please call Diane Miskowski at (800) 220-3675 extension 2528.

As an added resource, EMSL has created a Legionella Pocket Guide with important information on the bacteria and different sampling techniques. For a free copy of this guide, please click here.
