Title EMSL Buffalo, New York Lab Offers Legionella Testing with CDC ELITE and New York State ELAP Certification
Introduction EMSL Analytical, Inc. is certified by the State of New York to analyze Legionella samples.

Buffalo, NY, October 17th, 2016

Recently, New York State and New York City announced new regulations for registering cooling towers and monitoring them for Legionella contamination. Within the ruling, New York State Department of Health Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NYSDOH ELAP) now mandates that all laboratories providing Legionella analysis for facilities in New York State must pass their certification program. This is a separate from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Environmental Legionella Isolation Techniques Evaluation (CDC ELITE) Program. EMSL Analytical, Inc.’s Buffalo laboratory has received its interim NYSDOH ELAP certification for Legionella testing in the state of New York. EMSL earned three additional NYSDOH ELAP interim certifications for Legionella testing in Carle Place, NY, New York City, NY and Cinnaminson, NJ.

“As a leading Legionella testing laboratory, EMSL continues to work towards securing the certification necessary to provide quality analysis in the state of New York,” said Diane Miskowski, MPH, National Legionella Program Manager at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Since requirements for the amount of time between sampling and testing for Legionella may vary, EMSL has worked hard to attain NYSDOH ELAP certification in convenient locations for clients resulting in three accredited laboratories in New York and one in New Jersey. In addition, our network has 15 CDC ELITE proficient locations, so we are equipped to handle large testing requests resulting from outbreaks.”

EMSL can also perform sequenced-based typing, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and whole genome sequencing for Legionella outbreak source identification. To learn how the NYSDOH ELAP Legionella and the CDC ELITE lab programs differentiate, or the contrast between culture and molecular testing, please contact EMSL’s Diane Miskowski at (800) 220-3675 extension 2528.

EMSL has recently made a Legionella Pocket Guide that provides important information on the bacteria and the different sampling techniques associated with it.
