Title Mold Contamination Sends Firefighters Out of Florida Fire Station
Introduction EMSL Analytical, Inc. provides testing services and monitoring instruments to identify water damage, elevated humidity levels and the presence of mold.

Orlando, FL, December 14, 2016

In November, WFLA broadcasted a story about mold contamination at a recently built fire station in Florida. According to the report, humid air making its way to the attic of the fire station has caused extensive mold growth on the air ducts and caused health concerns for the firefighters stationed in the building.

The mold was reportedly first noticed over two years ago and has now resulted in plans for the staff of the fire station to move into temporary offices and housing around the building until the mold can be remediated and the problem resolved.

“Mold is a common problem in Florida due to the area’s high humidity levels, frequent heavy rains and vulnerability to powerful storms,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “However, mold can occur anywhere and when people are exposed to elevated levels of it in the air they breathe, health concerns can quickly arise. Anytime there has been a flooding event, high humidity or water leaks of any kind, there is the potential for mold to begin to grow in less than 48 hours on many building materials, furnishings and personal belongings if they are not properly dried.”

People concerned about the possible presence of mold in their home, school or work environment are encouraged to have the property inspected and tested for the presence of elevated levels of mold. EMSL Analytical Inc. offers mold testing, sampling supplies and easy-to-use test kits. These services can help to identify a mold issue so that corrective actions can be implemented to stop the moisture problem and have the mold contamination removed from the environment. EMSL also offers water damage testing field instrumentation that can be essential in finding the source of any moisture.
