EMSL’s Senior Mycologist, Dr. Željko Jurjevic, along with scientists from around the world, have discovered a new Aspergillus species after successfully splitting Aspergillus candidus in two. Aspergillus candidus is a species frequently isolated from stored grain, food, indoor environments, soil and occasionally from clinical material.
Through DNA sequencing from four loci, one new species, Aspergillus dobrogensis was discovered. The separation of A. dobrogensis from Aspergillus candidus is significant, as the species reflects different exometabolite profiles. The discovery of Aspergillus dobrogensis could lead to a wide array of antifungal agents for treatment of infections caused by species of Aspergillus section Candidi.
“We are very proud of Dr. Jurjevic’s discoveries and the overall dedication of our microbiology department at EMSL,” said Dr. Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Dr. Jurjevic’s impressive accomplishment is a tribute to our dedicated staff that works to provide high-quality data for clients while providing breakthrough information to help the overall industry.”
The research article, Polyphasic data support the splitting of Aspergillus candidus into two species; proposal of Aspergillus dobrogensis sp. nov., was published in the February 2018 issue of the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology.
