Title Midwest Flooding Causes Widespread Property Damage and Indoor Environmental Quality Concerns
Introduction EMSL Analytical provides testing services, sampling supplies and easy-to-use test kits to identify chemical and microbial hazards following flood damage.

Indianapolis, IN, March 2nd, 2018

Last month, heavy rains in parts of the central and southern United States caused widespread flooding from Michigan and Indiana to Ohio and Kentucky. A number of rivers in these and other states overflowed their banks and inundated huge areas along such waterways as the Ohio River and Grand River.

Tragically, the floodwaters have been blamed for several deaths and damage to countless cars, homes and businesses. With the water now receding in most areas, property owners and tenants are faced with cleaning up the mess and filing insurance claims. It is also an important time for people to recognize that many buildings that were damaged by floodwaters likely now pose health concerns for any building occupants and especially those tasked with cleanup and repair duties. Standing water and wet materials are a breeding ground for microorganisms, including everything from viruses and bacteria to mold. Floodwaters often also contain chemical contaminants such as fuels, fertilizers and industrial chemicals.

“Many of these contaminants can become airborne and create indoor air quality issues and immediate health concerns, especially during clean up, demolition and repair activities,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Another health and safety issue is the presence of lead-based paints and asbestos-containing materials in homes and commercial buildings built up until the late 1970s when these materials were finally no longer commonly used.”

To help flood victims, EMSL Analytical offers testing services for mold, bacteria, sewage contamination, chemicals, lead-based paints, asbestos and other environmental, health and safety concerns. They have laboratories located throughout the impacted region and across the country that provide testing, sampling supplies and test kits. EMSL has even sponsored an educational video about flood cleanup and indoor air quality (IAQ) issues that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/3Q1tnHFkPF0.
