Many allergy sufferers in the United States and Canada associate allergies with the spring season, however allergies can be a problem any month of the year, including during the hot summer months. Summer allergies can be caused by seasonal outdoor culprits or due to the presence of indoor allergens.

Two of the most common causes of summer allergies are due to the presence of elevated levels of pollen and mold. Depending on where a person lives, they are likely to be exposed to a variety of pollens. Generally speaking, trees mainly pollinate during spring, but grasses and weeds cause pollen allergies throughout the summer months in many regions.

“High levels of airborne mold spores are also a common occurrence during the summer months,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Outdoors, warm and moist weather conditions are conducive for elevated mold spore counts which can be an issue for people working or enjoying the outdoors. These same spores can also make their way indoors through open windows and doors, and even on people’s clothes and hair. Mold can also originate from inside people’s homes, offices and schools if there are humidity issues or there has been water damage. Even mold growing out-of-sight in a crawl space, basement, attic, or in a wall cavity, can cause indoor air quality problems. Dust mites are another common indoor allergen that thrive in many areas during the summer months."
