Title E. coli Fears Prompt the Recall of Some Macadamia Nut Products Sold in Hawaii
Introduction EMSL Analytical offers testing services to identify E. coli and other foodborne pathogens to help prevent outbreaks, product recalls and the high costs associated with these events.

Cinnaminson, NJ,  December 14th , 2018

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recently posted information about a recall of macadamia nut products that were packaged in Hawaii and sold in retail stores across the islands. The voluntarily recall was announced out of an abundance of caution under the advisement of the Hawaii State Department of Health (DOH).

According to the posting, the company that owns the packaging facility was “recalling all of its products produced at the Keaau facility between Sept. 6 - 21, 2018 due to a potential contamination of Escherichia coli (E. coli). The recall was initiated due to E. coli being detected in the well water and distribution system that supplies the firm’s operations.” Consumers who have purchased the recalled products are being advised to discard them immediately.

E. coli are a diverse group of bacteria found in the environment and intestines of people and animals. Although most strains of E. coliare harmless, and some are an important part of a healthy intestinal tract, others can cause severe illnesses. Some can cause diarrhea, urinary tract infections, respiratory illness and pneumonia, as well as other conditions.

“To help prevent microbial contamination issues at food processing and packaging facilities, EMSL Analytical provides food and environmental testing to identify E. coli and other foodborne pathogens frequently associated with product recalls and foodborne illnesses,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “These services can be utilized to test water supplies, ingredients or final products. Testing is also essential to confirm that surface cleaning and disinfection procedures in processing and packaging facilities are effective.”
