Late last year, the
Tampa Bay Times published a report about mold issues at the nearby VA Healthcare System. According to the article, a number of workers have been moved from their offices due to the presence of elevated levels of indoor mold.
The column discusses past employee complaints that go years back. It also identifies one of the species of mold that was identified by consultants hired to investigate the situation. The mold is known as
Aspergillus and some types of it can be a major concern for anyone that suffers from a weakened or suppressed immune system as it can cause opportunistic infections. Aspergillosis is the name of disease in humans and there are multiple types, including allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA), allergic
Aspergillus sinusitis, aspergilloma, chronic pulmonary aspergillosis, invasive aspergillosis and cutaneous aspergillosis.
“All types of healthcare facilities need to be especially vigilant for the presence of mold contamination to help prevent infections, allergic reactions, asthma attacks in susceptible people with the condition and general respiratory irritation,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “At EMSL, we have multiple laboratories across Florida and dozens more throughout the United States and Canada that offer mold and other environmental testing services to identify the presence of microbial pathogens. Samples are routinely analyzed at our facilities to help ensure air, water and surfaces in sensitive environments are not likely to cause healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and other adverse reactions. These services are instrumental in confirming that cleaning and disinfection procedures meet infection control protocols.”
In addition to environmental testing, EMSL offers all of the sampling supplies needed, easy-to-use test kits, building inspection tools to identify moisture issues and water damage, and other services to help ensure good indoor environmental quality. EMSL has also sponsored an educational video about aspergillosis and moldy indoor environments that can be seen at:
