Cinnaminson, NJ, April 2
nd , 2019
For the past 17 years, National Healthy Schools Day has been promoted to raise awareness of indoor air quality (IAQ) and indoor environmental quality (IEQ) issues in the nation’s schools. The day of recognition takes place on April 2
nd and is coordinated by the Healthy Schools Network. It is supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Indoor Environments Division along with many other agencies and organizations.
This recognition is important because far too many public and private schools face challenges when it comes to providing a healthy indoor environment for their students and faculty. Aging buildings and limited operating budgets often delay preventive maintenance and repair projects that when not addressed promptly, can have an impact on both the IAQ and IEQ of a school building.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states, “Evidence from schools and office building studies demonstrate that various environmental conditions are closely associated with the incidence of measurable adverse health effects, and that indoor air quality problems can result in increased absences because of respiratory infections, allergic diseases from biological contaminants, or adverse reactions to chemicals used in the building.”
“Exposure to chemicals, mold, bacteria, particulates, radon, asbestos, lead and other substances can all have a negative impact on students’ ability to learn as well as everyone’s long-term health and safety,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “A healthy indoor environment is a key component for every school’s success. EMSL Analytical proudly supports the efforts of raising awareness of National Healthy Schools Day.”
With dozens of environmental testing laboratories located across the United States and Canada, EMSL offers indoor testing from all types of airborne, surface, dust, material and water samples.
