EMSL’s Senior Mycologist, Dr. Željko Jurjevic, along with scientist Stephen W. Peterson from the USDA, USA, have discovered eight new Talaromyces species from different substrates, including air from the built environment, corn seeds and various soils. Geographically the isolates came from Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent, Africa, North America, South America and Europe, with the greatest proportion coming from corn in the central United States.
The eight new species of Talaromyces were named
Talaromyces argentinensis, Talaromyces californicus, Talaromyces domesticus, Talaromyces louisianensis, Talaromyces malicola, Talaromyces pratensis, Talaromyces soli, Talaromyces tumuli.
Talaromyces contains species that are medically important along with some species that are important to the food industry. Additionally, some species of Talaromyces have been shown to produce mycotoxins, while others have been found to be useful in Bio-control and other biotechnological purposes.
“We are very proud of Dr. Jurjevic’s discoveries and the overall dedication of our microbiology department at EMSL,” said Dr. Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Dr. Jurjevic’s impressive accomplishment in providing breakthrough information to help the overall industry while still providing high-quality data for clients is a tribute to our dedicated staff at EMSL.”
