Earlier this summer the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) posted information about the recall of almost 100 cases of fish food designed specifically for Siamese fighting fish, more commonly known as bettas. The company behind the recall reported that the packages in question were distributed to Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

According to the recall notice, “Fish with Salmonella infections are not well documented and fish carrying Salmonella typically do not show any signs of disease.” However, it also states, “Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.”

Fortunately, at the time of the FDA posting there had been no reports of illnesses. Consumers are still being urged to return the product from the production lots of concern to the place of purchase for a full refund.
