Title Arizona Government Building Temporarily Closed Due to Bed Bug Infestation
Introduction EMSL Analytical provides easy-to-use test kits and laboratory services to identify the existence of bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) in homes and buildings utilizing advanced qPCR testing methods.

Phoenix, AZ, November 25th , 2019

Earlier this fall, the Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES) announced one of the agency’s offices would be temporarily shut down for ten days. The closure impacted 130+ employees and all of the clients that would normally use the facility. The reason for the closure was bed bugs.

Bed bugs are small, flat, parasitic insects that feed on the blood of people and animals, usually while they sleep. They are experts at hiding, which can make them difficult to find. The presence of bed bugs can be an ongoing annoyance because they often cause itching and loss of sleep for people living or working in, or visiting, an infested property. Some people may also suffer allergic reactions caused by their presence.

“In recent years, there have been countless reports of bed bugs infestations in places that had not had these types of infestations for decades or more,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Fortunately, there is a highly sensitive method to test for the presence of bed bugs. EMSL offers a simple test kit that allows people to collect a dust sample that is then sent to the laboratory where it is analyzed using advanced and highly sensitive DNA-based techniques. If test results indicate the insects are present, corrective actions can then be implemented to eradicate the pests. One test could help prevent a situation from becoming an all-out infestation that could cause the temporary closure of a business or government office, and all of the negative publicity and costs associated with these occurrences.”

EMSL has also has sponsored an educational video about bed bugs that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/gfAt_UAgNqA.
