The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently posted information about a New York company’s recall of a lot of hog grower pellets produced this past summer. The agency reportedly tested a sample and determined that the levels of vomitoxin in the lot exceeded guidelines for swine feed and could be harmful to animal growth and potentially fatal to young swine.
According to the recall notice, vomitoxin (deoxynivalenol or DON) is known to cause vomiting, ulcer in the mouth, feed refusal and decreased body weight gain in swine of all age classes. Swine exposure to elevated levels of vomitoxin in feed for an extended period may lead to intestinal and liver damage, kidney failure, immune system failure and eventually death.
“Vomitoxin is produced by molds in the genus
Fusarium and is known for its impact on grains such as wheat, barley, oats and corn,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Under the Animal Feed Contaminants Program, vomitoxin and several other mycotoxins are contaminants that are routinely monitored for by the agency. To prevent mycotoxins from becoming an animal health hazard, animal feed manufacturers are required to conduct a hazard analysis that identifies potential hazards within the manufacturing process. They also must provide evidence of consistent monitoring and preventive controls for mycotoxins in animal feed. At EMSL, our scientists provide mycotoxin testing services to help feed producers comply with these requirements.”
EMSL Analytical’s mycotoxin testing identifies aflatoxins (B1, B2, G1, and G2), zearalenone, ochratoxin A and vomitoxin. The company also provides microbial testing for a wide range of fungi and bacteria. These services are available to food and feed manufacturers, retailers, importers, exporters, distributors, government regulators and the general public.
