EMSL’s Senior Mycologist, Dr. Željko Jurjevic, along with scientist Pedro W. Crous, discovered a new species of fungi.
Monochaetia massachusettsianum was
named after Massachusetts, where the fungal culture was collected.
Monochaetia is a genus of fungi in the family
Amphisphaeriaceae. Species in the
Amphisphaeriaceae family are typically plant parasites and cause leaf spot diseases on various hosts.
Monochaetia is characterized by acervular conidiomata, fusoid and transversely septate conidia, with brown median cells and a single cellular apical and basal appendage.
“We are very proud of Dr. Jurjevic’s discoveries and the overall dedication of our microbiology department at EMSL,” said Dr. Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Dr. Jurjevic’s impressive accomplishment in providing breakthrough information to help the overall industry while still providing high-quality data for clients is a tribute to our dedicated staff at EMSL.”
The new species can be viewed in
