Title Could You or a Family Member Be Suffering From Winter Allergies?
Introduction EMSL Analytical provides indoor air and dust testing services, sampling supplies and test kits to identify mold, pollen and other respiratory irritants, allergens and asthma triggers.

Cinnaminson, NJ, March 3rd , 2020

In many parts of the United States and Canada, people have been spending a significant amount of their time indoors during the last several months due to the cold winter weather. Unfortunately, during this time of year when homes and buildings are shut tight to keep out the frigid temperatures, exposure to elevated levels of indoor allergens can be a significant issue.

Indoor allergies are sometimes confused with the common cold, but if the condition lasts for more than 10 days the cause is likely due to allergies and not a cold. Winter allergy sufferers may feel tired and experience itchy eyes and throat, along with watery and clear nasal secretions that may last for weeks or more, but can also be sporadic. For those who have instead caught a common winter cold, they are likely to develop body aches, fever, chills and discolored nasal secretions that are usually gone within a week.

In areas experiencing cold temperatures, homes and buildings have their heating systems turned on and windows closed. If there is inadequate fresh air and/or poor filtration, the indoor environmental quality (IEQ) can suffer as a number of common indoor allergens accumulate. In some cases, the building’s HVAC system may even spread these allergens from room to room or in multi-tenant scenarios, from unit to unit.

“Common indoor allergens include mold, pollen and allergens associated with dogs, cats, rats, mice, dust mites, cockroaches and even latex,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “At EMSL, we offer indoor air quality and dust sample testing services for these and many other allergens, asthma triggers and respiratory irritants. We provide sampling supplies and carry a line of easy-to-use IEQ test kits. If sample results indicate the presence of allergens, steps can then be taken to mitigate people’s exposure.”

EMSL has also sponsored an educational video about winter allergies and indoor air quality that can be seen at: http://youtu.be/_s_hwuk30ac.
