EMSL’s Senior Mycologist, Dr. Željko Jurjevic, along with an international group of scientists, discovered six new species of
Aspergillus section
Nidulantes. Four of the species were isolated from the indoor environment (Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and USA), one originated from soil (Australia) and one from a kangaroo rat cheek pouch (USA).
Aspergillus is a genus of fungi that contains more than 400 species, with six subgenera and approximately 25 sections.
Aspergillus section
Nidulantes encompasses almost 80 species, mostly isolated from soil, plant material or the indoor environment. It was discovered that species from section
Nidulantes are the most common
Aspergillus species in the indoor environment. Common sources of novel species in
Aspergillus are soil, indoor environment, food, clinical material and house dust.
“Dr. Jurjevic’s passion and expertise for scientific discovery continues to add unprecedented information on the role of fungi in indoor air quality.” said Dr. Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “EMSL is proud of our dedicated microbiology staff that provide quality results to our clients that is second to none in the industry.”
