Title Tool Kit Designed for Children Recalled Due to Lead Content and Toy Safety Requirements
Introduction EMSL Analytical offers comprehensive lead testing services, sampling supplies and test kits to identify lead hazards from toys, consumer goods, paint, dust, food, water and soil samples.

Cinnaminson, NJ, May 19th , 2020

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently posted information about the recall of over 20,000 children’s tool kits. The kits were purchased by consumers from stores and online from September of 2002 through November of last year in the United States and Canada.

According to CPSC, the tool belt, hammer and suspenders in the kit contain excessive levels of lead (Pb), violating the federal lead content standard. In addition, the toy goggles and hardhats do not meet toy safety requirements. Consumers are advised to immediately stop using these recalled tool kits and keep them away from children.

This is important as exposure to lead can affect nearly every system in the body and although people of all ages can be at risk of exposure, children are especially vulnerable. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), no safe blood lead level in children has been identified.

“Many parents may not realize that some toys may contain lead,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Although there are regulations in the United States to protect children from lead in children’s products, some toys that have been made in other countries and then imported into the United States may still be putting children at risk. This can also be true for some antique toys and collectibles passed down through generations that were made when the use of lead was quite common.”

With laboratories across the United States and Canada, EMSL Analytical, Inc. offers lead and other testing services for toys and consumer products. They also provide lead testing services for samples from indoor and outdoor environments. These services are available to consumers, health and safety advocates and regulatory agencies. Testing is also offered to manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers to help prevent these types of costly product recalls.

To help inform the public about lead risks in toys, EMSL has sponsored an educational video that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/vnnkb4Pr1uM.
