In a North Carolina County, officials from its Environmental Health and Safety Division conducting routine inspections in facilities that serve the public recently discovered lead (Pb) dust hazards. Two Raleigh, North Carolina locations, a daycare and a private school, were both found to have unsafe lead dust levels.
According to the county officials, operators of each facility were notified and provided guidance for cleaning up the dust. Letters were also mailed to families whose children may have been exposed to the lead dust. In many situations like these, the lead dust typically comes from lead-based paints that were used for decades before they were banned. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that lead from paint, including lead-contaminated dust, is one of the most common causes of lead poisoning.
“Over the last several years, the public has seen a number of news reports about lead exposure risks from drinking water in schools and daycare centers all across the country, but lead-based paints are still a hazard in countless buildings and homes,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Lead exposure involving children is considered to be especially risky. This is because their bodies are still developing and they are growing so rapidly. Children also tend to put their hands or other objects that may be contaminated with lead dust into their mouths.”
Fortunately, lead poisoning is preventable. EMSL Analytical, Inc. offers lead testing from dust, water, air, paint chips, soil, bulk materials and other types of samples. They offer supplies needed to take and submit samples as well as supply easy-to-use lead test kits. EMSL has an environmental laboratory in Raleigh, Charlotte, Kernersville and dozens more across the United States and Canada.
