Title Dietary Supplement for Babies Recalled Due to Possible Undeclared Milk Allergen
Introduction EMSL Analytical provides supplement and food testing services to identify allergens.

Cinnaminson, NJ, September 15th, 2020

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced that company out of Texas had initiated a recall of a dietary supplement designed for babies. The recall involves one batch of the dietary supplement due to a possible undeclared milk allergen. The product was distributed nationwide through internet and retail sales.

According to the recall notice, people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products. The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) requires that product labels clearly identify the food source names of all ingredients that are, or contain any protein derived from, the eight most common food allergens. These account for 90% of allergic reactions to foods and include milk, crustacean shellfish, fish, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soybeans.

“Since there is no cure for food allergies, strict avoidance of the allergens from any type of consumable product is critical for those with the condition to prevent a possible allergic reaction,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Food allergies are common, in fact, the FDA estimates that each year anaphylaxis caused by food allergens results in 30,000 emergency room visits, 2,000 hospitalizations and 150 deaths in just the United States.”

Providing testing services to protect people from accidently consuming these allergens and to help prevent costly product recalls are the food scientists at EMSL Analytical, Inc. Their network of laboratories across North America provide food allergen, labeling and a wide array of other supplement and food-related testing services. Testing is available for manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers, regulatory agencies and the public.
