Title Sippy Cups Recalled Due to Lead and Phthalate Levels Exceeding Limits
Introduction EMSL Analytical offers consumer product testing for lead, phthalates and other regulated substances.

Orlando, FL, January 20th, 2021

An import company out of Florida recently announced the recall of almost 10,000 children’s sippy cups. According to a notice posted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the plastic characters on the sippy cups contain levels of lead that exceed the federal lead content ban and contain levels of a regulated phthalate that exceeds the prohibition of specific phthalates.

The sippy cups were imported from China and sold between 2014 and last year. The product was available in various surf shops in Florida, South Carolina and New Jersey, as well as at the Tampa International Airport.

Information published by CPSC reports that lead and banned phthalates are toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health issues. Consumers are advised to immediately take the recalled Sippy Cups away from children and contact the importer for instructions on how to return the product for a full refund.

“Exposure to lead or phthalates above what is allowed is concerning, especially when it  involves products designed for children,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Although all of the human health effects of various phthalate exposures are not fully understood, some are suspected to be endocrine disruptors. This is why their use has been restricted in certain childcare articles and toys since children can easily be exposed to these chemicals by chewing on items that contain them. Regarding lead, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that there is no safe blood lead level in children, which is exactly why there are regulations to keep the heavy metal out of products like these.”

There have been numerous products imported from China and other countries that have been recalled in recent years due to elevated lead levels and other concerns. Companies that import, distribute and retail products from overseas need to be aware of this and know they can turn to the consumer product testing experts at EMSL Analytical, Inc. With laboratories across the United States and Canada, EMSL offers lead, phthalate and other consumer product testing services.
