Recently, one of the nation’s largest commercial and residential pest control companies released its annual list of top 50 cities in the United States where the most bed bug treatments were performed at. Chicago moved up two spots from last year’s list, to rank first. The cities that follow close behind are Baltimore, Washington, DC, Detroit, and Columbus, OH.
Bed bugs are small, flat, parasitic insects that feed on the blood of people and animals, usually while they sleep. They are experts at hiding, which can make them difficult to find. The presence of bed bugs can be an ongoing annoyance because they often cause itching and loss of sleep for people living, working in, or visiting an infested property. Some people may also suffer allergic reactions caused by their presence.
“Bed bug infestations can take place almost anywhere,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “These parasitic insects have been found in everything from homes and apartments to luxury resorts. Bed bugs have also been an issue on trains, commercial airplanes, and cruise ships. Fortunately, EMSL offers an easy-to-use test kit that requires a dust sample, which is then sent to the laboratory where it is analyzed using highly sensitive DNA-based techniques. Testing is instrumental, as buildings or businesses can temporarily close due to an infestation.”
EMSL has also sponsored an educational video about bed bugs that can be seen at
