Title National Lyme Disease Awareness Month and Testing Ticks for Borrelia Burgdorferi
Introduction EMSL Analytical, the nation's leading environmental testing laboratory, provides PCR-based DNA analysis and easy-to-use sample collection test kits to identify the bacterium that causes Lyme disease from infected ticks.

Cinnaminson, NJ, May 10th, 2021

May is recognized as National Lyme Disease Awareness Month. It is a time to spread information about what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States.

This month is also the beginning of tick season in many parts of the country, making it an excellent time for people living in, or traveling to areas where Lyme disease is common, to take preventive measures. These include knowing where to expect ticks, avoiding contact with ticks, treating clothes and gear with the appropriate EPA-registered insect repellants, and checking pets and one’s body after being outdoors. Occupational exposure to Lyme disease is also a significant concern for millions of workers who spend time outdoors where infected ticks can be found.

“Approximately 30,000 cases of Lyme disease are reported to the CDC by state health departments and the District of Columbia each year. However, recent estimates using other testing methods suggest that approximately 476,000 people may get Lyme disease annually in the U.S.,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “In North America, the disease is caused primarily by the bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks. These ticks can attach to any part of the human body.”

EMSL Analytical has developed a Lyme Disease Tick Test Kit that tests actual ticks for Borrelia burgdorferi. When a tick has been collected, it is sent to EMSL’s laboratory, where it is tested using highly sensitive PCR-based DNA analysis. Suppose a tick was removed from a person or pet, and the results from the laboratory come back positive for Borrelia burgdorferi; in that case, possible treatment options could then be started by medical professionals or veterinarians.
