Earlier this year, the Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy in the U.S. House of Representatives released Baby Foods Are Tainted with Dangerous Levels of Arsenic, Lead, Cadmium, and Mercury. The staff report examined internal company documents and test results from manufacturers of baby food in the United States, including both makers of organic and conventional products. The Subcommittee found that some commercial baby foods are tainted with significant levels of toxic heavy metals, including those metals listed in the report’s name.

The following month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced new actions to reduce toxic elements in food for babies and young children. It issued a letter to the industry reminding manufacturers of these types of foods, of their existing responsibilities related to these efforts. Secondly, the agency announced it would soon be putting into action a plan aimed at reducing toxic elements in foods for babies and young children to levels as low as reasonably achievable.
