Toronto, ON, May 18 th, 2021 The sampling and evaluation program from Health Canada recently determined that imported children’s earring sets sold by a large online retailer contain lead and cadmium over the country’s allowable limits. Manufactured in China, the earring sets included 33 pairs and were sold in Canada from April of 2019 through January of this year. According to the recall notice: Under the Children's Jewelry Regulations of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, it is illegal to import, advertise or sell jewelry items that appeal primarily to children under 15 years of age and contain more than 90 mg/kg total lead or more than 130 mg/kg total cadmium if the jewelry item is small enough to be totally enclosed in the small parts cylinder when a force of not more than 4.45 N is applied. Lead and cadmium are highly toxic, especially to children. A range of serious health effects have been associated with exposure to lead and cadmium, including anemia, vomiting, diarrhea, severe brain injury, convulsions, coma, and effects related to the liver, kidneys, heart, and immune system. In extreme cases, there have been deaths.
Fortunately, at the time of the recall notice, there had been no reports of incidents or injuries involving the product.
