A dietary supplement company recently issued an allergy alert and product recall of its collagen capsules. Florida officials notified the company about an undeclared fish ingredient which prompted the recall of over 13,500 units of the product that had been sold online and did not have the required allergen labeling.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted the announcement which states that people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to fish run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products. These consumers are advised to dispose of the capsules.

The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) requires that product labels clearly identify the food source names of all ingredients that are, or contain any protein derived from, the eight most common food allergens. These account for 90% of allergic reactions to foods and include fish, crustacean shellfish, milk, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans.
