Orlando, FL, June 9th
A dietary supplement company recently issued an allergy alert and product recall of its collagen capsules. Florida officials notified the company about an undeclared fish ingredient which prompted the recall of over 13,500 units of the product that had been sold online and did not have the required allergen labeling.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted the announcement which states that people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to fish run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products. These consumers are advised to dispose of the capsules.
The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) requires that product labels clearly identify the food source names of all ingredients that are, or contain any protein derived from, the eight most common food allergens. These account for 90% of allergic reactions to foods and include fish, crustacean shellfish, milk, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans.
“Food allergies are quite common, in fact, the FDA estimates that each year anaphylaxis caused by food allergens results in 30,000 emergency room visits, 2,000 hospitalizations, and 150 fatalities in the United States alone,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “There is no cure for food allergies so strict avoidance of the allergens from any type of consumable product is critical for those with the condition.”
The food scientists at EMSL Analytical provide labeling services as well as food allergen and other supplement and food-related testing services. These services are available to manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers, regulatory agencies, health care professionals, and the public.
