The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced last month that it had reached a settlement with a home renovation company in Hawaii for violations of federal lead-based paint regulations. Under the terms of the settlement, the firm has agreed to pay thousands of dollars in penalties for failing to comply with the Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule during various projects that took place in the state.

The RRP Rule was created to protect the public from lead-based paint hazards that can occur during repair or remodeling in homes and child-occupied facilities, such as schools that were built before 1978. It requires that individuals performing renovations be properly trained and certified and must follow lead-safe work practices. It also requires building contractors that renovate pre-1978 homes and child-occupied facilities to be certified by the EPA.

“One of the primary ways people, especially young children, are exposed to lead is through old lead-based paints found on the interior and exterior of homes and other buildings,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Lead is particularly dangerous to children because their growing bodies absorb more lead than adults do, and their brains and nervous systems are more sensitive to exposure. Even low levels of lead in the blood of children can result in behavioral and learning problems, slowed growth, hearing problems, anemia, hyperactivity, and even a lower IQ.”
