Title Indoor Environmental Quality is More Important Than Ever for Students and Faculty Returning to Classrooms
Introduction EMSL Analytical provides laboratory testing services, sampling supplies, test kits, air monitoring instruments, and building inspection tools to identify indoor environmental quality issues lurking in schools and other buildings.

Cinnaminson, NJ, August 6th, 2021

Students in towns and cities across North America are returning to in-person classroom studies this month and into September. Indoor environmental quality (IEQ) conditions will be even more important this year as building occupants in some schools will not only face challenges with mold, bacteria, and other all too common air quality concerns, mitigating the spread of COVID-19 will also be critical in the coming months.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), COVID-19 is mostly spread by respiratory droplets released when people talk, cough, or sneeze. The virus may also spread to hands from a contaminated surface and then to the nose or mouth, causing infection. Therefore, personal prevention practices (such as handwashing, staying home when sick), and environmental cleaning and disinfection are important principles. Proper ventilation and filtration can also go a long way towards preventing outbreaks.

“Even before the pandemic, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) stated that poor indoor air quality can impact the comfort and health of students and staff, which, in turn, can affect concentration, attendance, and student performance,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “The EPA went on to share the fact that if schools fail to respond promptly to poor indoor air quality issues, students and staff are at an increased risk of short-term health problems, such as fatigue and nausea, as well as long-term problems like asthma. Today you can add COVID-19 concerns to the equation. To help school districts meet the challenge of providing a safe and healthy learning environment, EMSL offers IEQ testing services for bacteria, viruses, and mold. We also provide sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, moisture meters, and other building inspection tools.”
