Fungal Disease Awareness Week takes place this year from September 20
th through the 24
th. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and partners have organized the week to highlight the importance of recognizing serious fungal diseases early enough in the course of a patient’s illness to provide life-saving treatment.
This year brings new challenges as the CDC states that it is important to consider fungal diseases in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic because the symptoms of some fungal diseases can be similar to COVID-19, including fever, cough, and shortness of breath. The agency is encouraging healthcare providers and patients to “Think Fungus” when symptoms of infection do not get better with treatment.
“Many people that develop a fungal infection have a weakened immune system, but exposure to elevated levels of fungi can cause other concerns for even those with a strong immune system,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Inhaling elevated levels of any type of fungi can cause respiratory irritation, allergies, and even act as an asthma trigger for some people with the condition. Therefore, identifying indoor mold growth, so it can be properly remediated, is so important for all of us.”
To help identify exposure risks, EMSL’s network of laboratories across the United States and Canada offer comprehensive indoor environmental quality (IEQ) laboratory testing services, sampling supplies, and test kits to detect mold and other indoor pollutants. EMSL also carries a full line of building inspection tools to help locate sources of moisture that could allow for its growth indoors.
Last year, EMSL sponsored an educational video about Fungal Disease Awareness Week that can still be seen at:
