Cinnaminson, NJ, October 13th
In August, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it would stop the use of the pesticide, chlorpyrifos on all food to better protect human health, particularly that of children and farmworkers. The EPA states the pesticide has been found to inhibit an enzyme, which leads to neurotoxicity, and has also been associated with potential neurological effects in children.
In a final rule released that month, the EPA revoked all “tolerances” for chlorpyrifos, which establishes an amount of a pesticide that is allowed on food. The agency also proclaimed it would issue a Notice of Intent to Cancel
under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act to cancel registered food uses of chlorpyrifos associated with the revoked tolerances.
Over the years, the organophosphate insecticide has been used for a large variety of agricultural uses, including soybeans, fruit and nut trees, broccoli, cauliflower, and other row crops, as well as non-food uses.
“A number of countries, including the European Union and Canada, had already restricted the use of chlorpyrifos on foods,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Exposure to this and other pesticides can cause harm to not only people consuming contaminated foods, but also to farmworkers and even potentially for residents living in areas of use. EMSL offers food, environmental, and industrial hygiene testing services to identify chlorpyrifos and many other organophosphate pesticides.”
