The month of November is recognized as Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer deaths for both men and women. This is why educating the public about what could increase a person’s chances of developing it is so important to help prevent new cases from occurring.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 218,500 people in the United States are told they have lung cancer and about 142,000 people die from the disease each year. Many cases of lung cancer can be prevented if people stopped smoking or were not exposed to secondhand smoke. CDC reports that nonsmokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke at home or at work increase their risk of getting lung cancer by 20% to 30%.
There are also other environmental factors that can increase the likelihood of developing the disease. For example, a significant cause of lung cancer is exposure to radon according to many health experts. Radon is a naturally occurring gas that comes from rocks and dirt and can get trapped in houses and buildings. CDC states that 1 out of 15 homes has a high level of radon. Since one cannot smell, taste or see radon, testing a home or building is the only way to find out if it has a radon issue.
“People can also be exposed to substances and chemical compounds at work that could increase their chances of developing lung cancer,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “There are many known occupational carcinogens that may be present in dusts or fumes. These include substances such as asbestos, arsenic, benzene, cadmium, ethylene oxide, diesel exhaust, and some forms of silica and chromium. EMSL supports the efforts of Lung Cancer Awareness Month and encourages people to learn more about airborne pollutants and respiratory health.”
EMSL’s laboratories provide an array of environmental and industrial hygiene testing services. They also offer sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, monitoring instruments and personal protective equipment (PPE). Several years ago, EMSL sponsored an educational video about Lung Cancer Awareness Month that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/LV7zwQiwaCQ
