Consumer Products Testing

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently posted information about the recall of over 13,000 children’s toy shaving kits. The products were sold nationwide in stores and online from July of 2020 through July of 2021.

The toys were manufactured in China and are being recalled because the brown trim of the shaving kit bags contains levels of a regulated phthalate that exceed the prohibition of specific phthalates. Banned phthalates are toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health issues. Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the recalled toy and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

“Exposure to elevated levels of phthalates is a concern for everyone, and this is especially true for children,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “The human health effects of various phthalate exposures are not completely understood, but some are strongly suspected to be endocrine disruptors. Federal regulations restrict their use in certain child care articles and toys since children can easily be exposed to these chemicals by chewing on items that contain them.”
