The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently posted information about the recall of a collection of painted furniture containing levels of lead that exceed the federal lead paint ban, posing a risk of lead poisoning. Lead is a toxic heavy metal that can cause a myriad of health effects.
The furniture collection, which includes metal chairs, barstools, and tables, was manufactured in Mexico and imported by a company in New England. According to CPSC, the furniture was sold in blue, white, and yellow paints. Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the recalled furniture and contact the importer for return instructions and a full refund.
“While the sale of lead-based paints has been banned in the United States for decades, it is still sold and used in many parts of the world,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “For companies that import painted goods, especially from developing nations, it’s important to recognize this unfortunate fact. Not only can products with lead-based paints put people at risk, these types of recalls can also be quite costly.”
The scientists at EMSL Analytical help manufacturers, importers, retailers, regulatory agencies, and the public identify lead hazards from products and environmental samples. EMSL operates testing facilities across the United States and Canada that offer testing services for lead and other heavy metals, along with many additional regulated and unregulated substances.
