Late last year, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and Health Canada posted information about the voluntary recall of certain lots of aerosol spray products used to reduce foot odors and for use as an antifungal agent. The recall to the consumer level in both countries is due to the presence of benzene in specific lots of the products.
The risk statement in the FDA-posted recall notice declares:
Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin and it can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening.
“This latest recall follows a number of other ones by various consumer product companies that occurred in 2021, all due to benzene exposure concerns,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “The other recalled aerosol products, ranging from sunscreens, antiperspirants and foot deodorants, were also taken off store shelves and consumers were told to not use them. Even though these products are said to have low levels of benzene, the chemical is a human carcinogen. To help prevent these types of risks to consumers, and the high costs associated with nationwide recalls, the consumer product, industrial hygiene, and environmental laboratories of EMSL Analytical offer benzene and other chemical testing services. With facilities across the United States and Canada, EMSL’s renowned scientists are available to help manufacturers, importers, retailers, regulatory agencies and public health professionals.”
