A number of toddler polyurethane trench coats designed for girls were recently recalled in Canada because they contained lead in excess of allowable limits according to Health Canada. The jackets, manufactured in China, were sold in Canada by an online fashion retailer from October of 2020 through September of last year.
According to the recall notice:
Lead is toxic if ingested, especially to children. A range of serious health effects have been associated with exposure to lead including anemia, vomiting, diarrhea, serious brain injury, convulsions, coma, as well as effects related to the liver, kidneys, heart, and immune system. In extreme cases, there have been deaths. Since lead builds up in the body, ongoing exposure to even very small amounts of lead can result in large amounts of lead being present in the body.
“Unfortunately, products designed for children are recalled year after year due to lead and other heavy metal concerns,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Canada, Inc. “Clothing, jewelry, and toys are some of the most common items. Many of the products recalled in North America come from imported goods. Companies that import, distribute and retail products from overseas need to be aware of this risk. In the United States and Canada, these companies can turn to the consumer product testing experts at EMSL Canada, Inc. We offer material and product testing for lead, cadmium, and other regulated substances. These services could help to prevent costly product recalls, not to mention the litigation that is so frequently associated with these types of events.”
