Countless homes and buildings have been constructed using drywall imported from China. Unfortunately, some of this drywall has been associated with the off-gassing of unpleasant odors from sulfur compounds and the corrosion of copper materials and some other metals. Much of the drywall causing problems was installed between 2001 and 2009.
Back in 2010, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), along with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), released a statement that recommended removing problem drywall from homes. It read, “Based on scientific study of the problem to date, HUD and CPSC recommend consumers remove all possible problem drywall from their homes, and replace electrical components and wiring, gas service piping, fire suppression sprinkler systems, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms. Taking these steps should help eliminate both the source of the problem drywall and corrosion-damaged components that might cause a safety problem in the home.”
The Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry (ATSDR) released a report about possible health implications from exposure to sulfur gases emitted from problematic Chinese drywall. Potential health effects included:
- Headaches
- Irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat
- Feeling tired
- Problems controlling respiratory conditions (like asthma)
“Odors, potential health effects, and damage to building components are all issues attributed to Chinese drywall that have also resulted in a number of legal proceedings over the years,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “EMSL Analytical recently introduced an easy-to-use test kit to detect elemental sulfur from drywall samples. A sample is collected with the kit and analyzed at our materials testing laboratory. These test kits are available to builders, environmental consultants, legal professionals, and the general public.”
